BIKRAM

with Patricia Antuna ✢ 12/31/2023

The studio got down to business. It reminded me of my days spent in ballet. I enjoy a wooden floor. It was a nice long length so that everyone could have ample room for the sequence at hand. Parking is easy on-premises right out front of the location. I always feel calmer attending a studio where I know there is guaranteed parking. Even though I’m a Virgo nutbag who shows up way too early no matter what to find parking at studios that do not have parking on the premises. There’s just something so relaxing about a guarantee for me.

Patricia was a strong instructor. She leads us through an abridged 60-minute version of the traditional 90-minute Bikram sequence. I have never taken any other 60-minute version of the 90-minute class before. The option to be able to sweat myself silly but not have to commit to 90 minutes was fantastic.

Patricia made astute use of instructional cues. I have rarely ever experienced a yoga teacher personally cueing to me by name the first time they met me in a class. Patricia provided me with personalized cues throughout the practice. She was able to get me deeper into the Bikram sequence in 60 minutes than I’ve been able to achieve in some 90-minute practices. Lots of 90-minute sequence instructors flow through the poses with ease, allowing alignment to fall by the wayside. Patricia gave me cues throughout to better perfect each posture as the original sequence was intended to be practiced. I felt a wider expansion in each pose, with her leading the way.

Patricia paid attention to the details of the minutia of the spine that I crave from alignment/hatha/Iyengar classes. It was entertaining to be able to attempt to punch those cues down while also dripping with sweat. This class was not heated in infrared style, so I was able to breathe much more freely because I personally feel like infrared dries up some of the humidity. I thoroughly enjoyed the pace of the class.

As previously mentioned, this was my first time practicing the traditional 90-minute Bikram class in a 60-minute time period, yet it did not feel rushed. I am not a regular Bikram practitioner - so I'm not the most knowledgeable regarding what made it abridged. I couldn’t tell you what was cut because we did two rounds of each pose, similar to the 90-minute traditional. I can tell you that it felt full throttle during the sequence, and I felt nice and maxed out the way a 90-minute class would have done.

I was above and beyond very grateful they provided an early morning class on New Year’s Eve day.

(Tip: This class is at a Power Flow level but is called Original Hot Yoga 60 at this studio. It is an edited version of the 90-minute traditional Bikram sequence.)

Yin

with Elizabeth Pumer ✢ 1/14/2024

This class was splendid. Elizabeth had an extremely soothing voice. Her ability to relax me throughout very intense yin positions was superb.

She was great at body scanning. She had a wonderful playlist. The poses were just long enough for me to melt but not long enough for me to lose myself. I really enjoyed the sequence. I have never been cued to hold deaf man’s pose in a yin class. A restorative deaf man's pose was wonderful, and I would have never expected the results I achieved. Elizabeth is creative and calming - and provided ways to generate soft energy throughout the yin class, which I'd never encountered. I've always been led to dissipate energy, not charge, into it - it was nice to learn how to initiate a positive charge softly.
