POWER FLOW

with Julia Izquierdo ✢ 12/29/2023

The studio entrance had the usual products for sale: refreshments, mats, props, clothing, etc., but this particular studio also had crystals. The design of the space was extremely organic and creative and cultivated very grounding vibes - the crystals just took that beauty to another level. The studio also smelled amazing. I was very attracted to the energy of the space even before I walked into the practice room.

I am cork obsessed, so I will say this is one of my favourite studios because they went all out with the cork. Cork is antimicrobial, so it’s a wonderful substrate to use in a hot yoga studio. I say hot - however - this studio was such a pleasure to practice hot yoga in because it was, in fact, a β€˜warm’ yoga studio. This is because they had a deep heat during class, but it was kept at a warm level instead of a blinding heat zone. I was able to perfect my poses so much more intentionally because I was sweating mostly from the workout and not just the temperature of the room.

Everyone who was practicing here was very respectful and quiet in the pre-class. I was able to enter into a deep pre-savasana meditation. Even though the space is in a very popular spot for tourists and locals alike, I never felt the buzz and roar of the commotion outside. It was nice to walk into a quiet zen after trying to find parking in this busy area. It was also kind of transporting to walk upstairs away from the street level into a treehouse of serenity. Definitely come as early as possible so you can score some sweet street parking.

Julia was a 10/10 instructor. She had great timing and breathing cues, which lasted throughout the practice. I was excited by her sequence. I have been doing yoga full-time since March (2-3hrs daily), and I can say I learned a lot of new things from Julia. There were a ton of amplifications that provided opportunities for hardcore upgrades; however, surprisingly, those movements were so low-key at the same time. Julia provides a poised and subtle burn similar to a barre class. I absolutely enjoyed her flow.

For instance, Julia pumped up the volume on Skandasana by just having us sit down and lift back up into a squat combined with a knee tap that really worked all of the muscles that sometimes I feel are neglected in yoga. There were a lot of moves that seemed standard that Julia would intensify with the slightest pulsation, which would cause their normal campfire to grow into a raging forest fire. I loved the cues for all of the binds; for some reason, when I’m in a flow state, I have a hard time remembering to enter into them. I’m also a sucker for the optional Birds of Paradise prompt in a long hold extended side angle, and Julia definitely brought it!

I had a great time practicing here and felt very calm after I left the space. I would definitely recommend this studio for someone who is serious about feeling as relaxed as possible while still receiving a deep workout.
